Giya Kancheli (1935–2019) was a Georgian composer from Tbilisi, a leading voice in late 20th‑century music. Known for extreme dynamic contrasts and spacious lyricism, he wrote seven symphonies, concertos, and extensive music for film and theater, later living and working in Western Europe.
