Giovanni Boldini

Sculptor, Painter or Photographer

Giovanni Boldini (1842–1931) was an Italian painter best known for his fashionable society portraits produced during the Belle Époque.

Born in Ferrara in 1842 and died in 1931, Boldini worked extensively in Paris and gained fame as a portraitist of high society; he is noted for rapid, fluid brushwork and elegant portrayals of fashionable women.

A single DeBaser review by sexyajax praises Boldini's Madamoiselle Lanthelme for its luminous face, bold brushwork and its place within early twentieth-century modernism. The reviewer situates the painting amid changing patronage and bourgeois taste. The piece is celebrated for its vivid, defined face set against blurred costume and atmosphere.
