The Profile

Giant Sand is an American band from Tucson, Arizona, led by singer-songwriter Howe Gelb. Emerging from the early-’80s Giant Sandworms, they blended desert atmospheres with Americana, country, blues, punk edge and lo‑fi experimentation. Their debut Valley of Rain (1985) set a jagged tone, followed by landmarks like Ballad of a Thin Line Man, Swerve, Chore of Enchantment, Is All Over ... the Map and Provisions. Alumni include Joey Burns and John Convertino, later of Calexico.

Led by Howe Gelb; origins in Tucson, Arizona (with a Pennsylvania-born frontman). Early members included Joey Burns and John Convertino (Calexico). Known for the ‘desert rock’ tag and collaborations/production with John Parish; tributes and ties to Rainer Ptacek. Guests and covers across albums include Vic Chesnutt, Scout Niblett, Isobel Campbell, PJ Harvey material and the Sex Pistols.

Five reviews trace Giant Sand’s dusty arc from the jagged debut Valley of Rain to exploratory turns like Swerve and the acclaimed Chore of Enchantment. Ballad of a Thin Line Man channels tributes and electricity, while Provisions leans nocturnal and rootsy. Is All Over the Map embraces detours, guests, and covers. Overall tone: warm, evocative, desert-baked.
