THE REVIEW

"Aria" is the 13th album by Gianna Nannini. It was released in 2002 after a four-year silence since her last (and weak) studio work, "Cuore". Produced by Christian Lohr, an internationally renowned musician who also handles all the electronic programming on the album; Armand Volker manages the mixes, and Isabella Santacroce co-writes all the lyrics.

"Aria" sounds totally different from the rest of the singer-songwriter’s works. We could say it clashes with the rest of her discography, but it’s not like that. It’s a successful/curious experiment.

Volo is a declaration of rebellion ("they told me it's not okay/they told me it’s not done/they told me stop/with your anarchic personality"). A flight with wings of fire. Uomini a metà is a hybrid of rock and hard electronics (with a touch of variety provided by the mandolin of maestro Mauro Pagani) and a text that proclaims a continuous struggle for existence ("bombs against the sky/to crown religious/romantic underworlds") and a struggle against the solitude of man who has always lived in the darkness of humanity ("I'm sick with light, tonight the voice will fall, in a silent sea, I will celebrate the absence of love"); there’s also time for a little journey into the world of fairy tales, fairy tales that we will barely be able to forget, where the real world ends and pure fantasy begins, that knows of velvety magic. It's impossible not to get lost. Aria is the point of contact with that reality. One of the most beautiful Italian songs in a long time. It’s also impossible not to be captivated by its cinematic vein (it's part of the soundtrack of the animated film Momo alla conquista del tempo, where Nannini curated all the music for the film).

The album continues without slipping into boredom, with a couple of truly successful episodes: DJ Morphine; Immortale; the icy Crimine d'amore ("and then you will return/yes you will return it won’t be enough/to be free/you will hold me like the wind that envelops/and then goes away") one of the album’s peaks; the uncompromising rock of Meravigliosamente crudele (again maestro Pagani enriching the atmosphere, this time with the lute); the rarefied atmospheres of Nuova era.

"Aria" can represent a break point in the musical universe of Gianna Nannini. It’s an album in front of which the average Nannini fan might turn up their nose.

A minor episode?? A flop?? No. Simply one of the most underrated moments of her discography. Hear it to believe it.

Summary by Bot

Released in 2002 after a four-year hiatus, Gianna Nannini’s Aria marks a bold, experimental shift in her career. With Christian Lohr's electronic programming and Mauro Pagani’s instrumental touches, the album blends rock, electronics, and poetic lyrics. Notable for its cinematic feel and lyrical depth, Aria remains one of her most underrated and captivating works. Fans of her earlier style may find it challenging but rewarding.

Sai
Nascono così
Fiabe che vorrei
Dentro tutti I sogni miei
E le racconterò
Per volare in paradisi che non ho
E non è facile restare senza piu' fate da rapire
E non è facile giocare se tu manchi
Aria come è dolce nell'aria
Scivolare via dalla vita mia
Aria respirami il silenzio
Non mi dire addio ma solleva il mondo
Sì
Portami con te
Tra misteri di angeli
E sorrisi demoni
E li trasformerò
In coriandoli di luce tenera
E riuscirò sempre a fuggire dentro colori da scoprire
E riuscirò a sentire ancora quella musica
Aria come è dolce nell'aria
Scivolare via dalla vita mia
Aria respirami il silenzio
Non mi dire addio ma solleva il mondo
Aria abbracciami
Volerò
Aria ritornerò nell'aria
Che mi porta via dalla vita mia
Aria mi lascerò nell'aria
Aria com'è dolce nell'aria
Scivolare via dalla vita mia
Aria mi lascerò nell'aria

Lacrimo me lacrimo me
Il grande amore cannibale
Ora io sono
Un canto che simula il vento
Non ho più me non ho più me
Il grande amore cannibale
Angeli di ali immobili
Sopra roghi gravidi
Succhiami respiri ultimi
E dopo mangiami
Angeli in grida armoniche
Celestiali spiriti
Mai si saziano
Il grande amore cannibale
Il grande amore cannibale
Il grande amore cannibale
Il grande amore cannibale
Divora me
Carnali danze
Quel che resta di un sogno da perdere
Piccolo spasimo
Il grande amore cannibale
Angeli di ali immobili
Sopra roghi gravidi
Succhiami respiri ultimi

Angeli in grida armoniche
