The GianmariaVolontè are an emerging pop-rock band born in 2009. Their discographic debut is the single (45 rpm) "Bimba Noir" containing the B-side track "Puppy Love".
The song "Bimba Noir" strikes the listener with its tube-driven guitar riff, topped by an elegant synth countermelody that gives the track a very vintage atmosphere. The catchy and easily memorable melody supports a well-crafted text that surely presents multiple layers of interpretation. The piece talks about a troubled teenage relationship while simultaneously and consistently delivering barbs at the decay of the Western world. The overall musical arrangement harkens back to the light music of the sixties on one side and to Battiato and Baustelle on the other. The song ends with a bewildering orchestral coda, with synths in the background.
"Puppy Love", unlike track 1, is sung in English and is characterized by a Beatlesque sound. The melody is very beautiful, recalling Lennon’s "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", while the touch of acoustic guitars, bass lines, vocal arrangements, and backward-looped electric guitars make the listener feel like they’re in front of an unreleased Beatles track from the Revolver period.
A very enjoyable single. On the band’s Myspace site, it’s possible to listen to the two songs from the single and other demo tracks.
