THE REVIEW

This third EP by Gescom is quite unconventional, a semi-anonymous release also known under the name C & D (named as such due to the sides being marked this way, much like a sequel to the debut) where Autechre highlight once and for all their worship of hip hop, avoiding the inclusion of genres like IDM or electro, sounds which the Gescom project is usually centered around. The confirmed guest - remember this is indeed an open project involving various artists from the SKAM circle - is here Andy Maddocks, later part of the excellent Meam project.

"Snackwitch" is a little gem: with daring colossal strings, funky bongos, vintage breaks, massive bass lines and analog synths making everything very warm and enveloping, it emerges as a unique specimen in the Autechre discography (or pseudo Autechre). However, the truly unmissable track is "Mag", a solid instrumental hip hop experiment with a remarkably street flavor, featuring typical funk samples and a heavy old-school beat, yet not sparing dub-based technicalities and swirling 303 riffs, venturing into a sort of acid-hop very close to the future work of Luke Vibert under the guise of Wagon Christ.

A good redemption after the disaster of "Motor".
