Georges Méliès (1861–1938) was a French illusionist and filmmaker, a pioneer of cinematic special effects and narrative film, and founder of the Star Film Company.

Directed Le Voyage dans la lune (1902). Produced hundreds of short films between c.1896 and 1913. Innovated techniques such as substitution splices, multiple exposures, dissolves and hand-painted color; widely recognized as a foundational figure in early cinema and fantasy filmmaking.
