Among all the albums I've bought in the past two and a half years, "Board Up The House" by the American band Genghis Tron is one of the most captivating.
Never too predictable, experimental and fierce, this album is a double assault: partly sonic and partly psychic. Firstly, because it's impossible to remain impassive to the band's cybernetic/psychedelic assault, and then because thanks to the experiments and melodies during the listening, one reaches such an emotional level that thoughts almost take flight. A true trip. It's as if you took a blender and mixed "Hallucinogen" with "The Locust", the result would certainly be very similar to "Board Up The House". Electronics, Noise disturbances, Grind outbursts, and distinctly Math/Post-Hc scores with a lot of schizophrenia; even the title track, placed at the beginning, is an example of the mastery of these three crazy Americans. The drum machine is properly programmed, and the inspired synth openings are perfectly tied to both abrasive and clean guitars in all ten songs of the record. Amidst the guitar riffs and the singer's shouts, we sometimes find ambient/glitch interludes that capture the listener and make them dream.
The melodic I Won't Come Back Alive, Things Don't Look Good, City On A Hill, and the almost doomy concluding track Relief, are very beautiful, in which, in my opinion, the highest emotional peak of the entire record is reached. The artwork is very well-crafted and colorful, definitely providing the perfect backdrop for Genghis Tron's experiments, and the production is excellent, perfectly rendering the sulfurous atmospheres released by the synths.
Ultimately, a very interesting and unique album, the important thing is to have an open mind for experimentation and new sounds.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
08 Colony Collapse (04:01)
In the belly of these dreadful days
What's there to believe
I plead: "what can I do"
Don't look ahead
It's all desperate ends
But I do, I do
Love will haunt all life,
In time, the world's undone.
In time, one death will bind.
Right now each mess we're in
Puts us in fate's harsh old hands
In the shadow of those looming days
What's there to believe
I plead: "What will I do, what then?"
You'll come to fear
Each day
Each night
You'll come to fear
Each day
Each night

They plant their flag with the flair of those who have gorged equally on electronic music and grindcore.
Eleven tracks without ever a drop in tone. Never. Always maniacal in the frantic and insane use of their working instruments.
