THE REVIEW

"Retina Riddim," in addition to serving as a preview of what the next studio album by Gang Gang Dance will be, also proves to be the summary of the entire artistic universe of the New York band. In fact, the work consists of a CD and a DVD.

The first features a single 24-minute track that highlights the multifaceted and complex sonic nature of the band, capable of blending radical electronica, avant-garde experimentation, pop melodies, wild sampling, cut-up, and quirky post and kraut rock, improvisation, and ethno/futurist moments. This will allow you to understand how the attempt is to steer clear of simple definitions, but with results that are not always convincing.

The DVD, on the other hand, features two films; "GGDbyOP" by Oliver Payne assembles video clips of Gang Gang Dance onstage during their 2004 U.S. and Australia tours, while "Retina Riddim," created by Brian DeGraw (a member of the group as well as a visual artist), mixes visual fragments supported by an appropriate soundtrack, with the two components traveling in tandem and where, without the second, the first would be pointless...!

Nothing groundbreaking.

Summary by Bot

Retina Riddim by Gang Gang Dance offers a glimpse into the band's expansive artistic range through a single 24-minute track and a complementary DVD. The album fuses electronica, avant-garde, and various rock influences aiming to defy straightforward classification, but with mixed success. The DVD features tour footage and visual art that enhances the listening experience. Overall, the release is an interesting preview but not groundbreaking.
