FUNNETS - Wanji
(Self-produced)
Is crossover dead? Are the Red Hot Chili Peppers prehistoric, part of a late last-century imagination? According to the Funnets, not at all. In fact, Funnets, both for the use of the bass (slapped in Flea's manner), for the use of guitars (blatantly punk funk), and for the vocal style itself (very similar to that of Anthony Kiedis), inevitably recall the legendary Los Angeles group. And someone might say: do we need an album that "copies" the Red Hot? Wouldn't it be easier to just dust off Blood Sugar Sex Magic? A reductive argument. If that's how one thinks, then the Oasis should be flushed down the toilet since they blatantly tried to copy the Beatles. Or what about the praised Verdena. A copy of Queens of the Stone Age or Motorpsycho? What to say? Everything has already been said, played, etc... The important thing is to resonate well... And the Funnets do just that. They play fearlessly. The singer knows what he’s doing when it comes to creating melodies and rap. And not everything is derivative. The band wants to reinvent a genre, modernizing it. Sometimes they don't succeed. But in most cases, they add their own touch. Byzantine, Shaman Song, and the single FOW are proof of that.
