A voice close, very close, to that of Freddie Mercury. That's the first thought that comes to mind when I hear the voice of Nate Ruess. The tone is very similar to that of the undisputed leader of Queen, one of the most beautiful voices in rock history. High, explosive.
The similarity with Queen is also felt in the first track of the album "Some Nights Intro": something akin to Bohemian Rhapsody, operetta style. Or rather "A Night At The Opera" style.
But the night at the opera starts and ends with the intro. From the second track (the title track "Some Nights") onward, an introspective adolescent reflection begins. The lyrics speak of escaping reality, the typical turmoil of someone who is halfway between being a child and being an adult, the desire to assert oneself and show the rest of the world who you are and what you can do. The anger, the frustration, the happy moments and the sad ones of those stuck in the limbo between childhood and adulthood, of those who would like to change everything but are afraid to take even one step. Of those who are prisoners of this fear, trapped between non-existent barriers. Of those who have not yet found a reason to fight and of those who are lost:
"But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for oh
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know anymore..."
An anthem to youth, an anthem to that period of life where you go from the highest peaks of happiness to moments of pure depression.
The album itself goes from explosions of joy, as for example in "We Are Young" (the moon is on my side, I have no reason to run), to dark moments, as in "All Alone" (no one's gonna fix me when I'm broke...).
A track to note is certainly "Stars": a concentration of loneliness and the desire to smash everything. Rhythmic changes and a slightly distorted voice, echoing, fittingly, among the stars. This song is dedicated to those who still feel nebulous, an undefined collection of gas and unnamed material. To those who still don't know they can shine with their own light.
"Some Nights" is an album for those who have not yet found what they are looking for. And for those who have always remained adolescent.
A good album, certainly a noteworthy novelty in this increasingly dark time for music. Fun can improve and, if they do improve, they can achieve great things.
"May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground
Carry on"

At the end of listening to 'Some Nights' I find myself feeling lighter and happy, with a big smile and 32 teeth printed on my face.
This is a beautiful album, Nate Ruess & Co, you’re a flower blossomed through asphalt, please, keep it up, I believe in you.
