The Fujiya & Miyagi, contrary to what their name might suggest, are a Scottish trio that plays indie-electronic music. In other words, electronic music (especially beats, keyboards, and various sound effects) overlaid with "live" guitar and bass and the seductive whispered voice of singer David Best.
Describing it this way might not sound like much of a mix, yet the mastery of Fujiya & Miyagi in balancing the "indie" and "electronic" components is such that this album is a Real Great Album.
An album that shines from a compositional/musical perspective and, above all, is highly entertaining. It effortlessly transitions from pop-sounding tracks with a driving rhythm and an inescapable hook ("In One Ear & Out The Other"), to almost "experimental" instrumentals lasting over 6 minutes, where percussion, irresistible bass loops, and synthesizers continuously alternate over electronic beats ("Cassettesingle").
From the striking crescendo of the opener "Ankle Injuries" to the concluding chill-out of "Cylinders", you are never let down. "Transparent Things" starts as a masterpiece and ends as a masterpiece. Missing out on it would be a real shame.
