Uff, what a bore these For My Pain... The group was born as a side-project of the bassist and drummer from Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, joined by the guitarist from EtoS, the singer from Reflexion, and the keyboardist from Nightwish. At first, it might seem like an interesting work, but the more you listen to it, the more you realize the opposite. "Fallen" is one of those albums that could not be further from the concept of "interesting." The fact is, it's difficult to completely dismiss it. I mean, the catchy melodies are there, as well as the perfect production quality, and certainly, technical skill isn't lacking...
The fact is that "Fallen," besides being not original at all, comes off as a flat, boring work, lacking personality, able to play quietly in the player for a week and then remain on the shelf for the rest of its days. The more you listen to it, the less convincing it is, that's the truth; these are the only defects since, technically and production-wise, everything is fine. "Only" in a manner of speaking, since they can easily undermine all the value a record tries to achieve through physical, external alternatives.
Appearing more than being, for For My Pain... indeed. The sounds harken back, as in many cases, to the inevitable H.I.M., and also to the latest Sentenced, even though the melodies are certainly more catchy, simple, and direct, to avoid using a term I personally hate ("commercial"). But is this a positive or negative aspect? The problem is that For My Pain... quickly becomes tiring, thus risking ending up forgotten soon.
In short, they might be appealing to someone looking for a simple band to listen to some nice and immediate songs on the gothic rock path that Finland has accustomed us to for a while, but I really can't find their usefulness in the music world which, needless to say, is vast. Maybe they deserve a few listens, but it's not really worth paying them much attention.
