FOLKABBESTIA - Giramondi (Maninalto)

The Folkabbestia are finally back with a new EP titled Giramondi.

Already from the title, you can sense the mentality of the band, which aims to represent the different faces that lie behind travels.

Giramondi is indeed a mosaic of stories encapsulated in various musical genres ranging from folk to rock, from ska to reggae, embodying various traditions of popular music (Irish, Italian, Mediterranean, and Balkan) and gypsy music.

The EP begins with a gypsy style thanks to “Esma,” a track that pays tribute to the greatest Romani singer of all time, Esma Redzepova, through a light yet extremely melancholic air.

It continues with “Il violino e il cappello,” a romantic and dreamy song that tells the story of two buskers through a perfectly composed sound, amidst ska rhythms, acoustic arpeggios, and floating accordions.

“La tempesta” instead mixes Mediterranean sounds and folk rhythms while telling the story of a migrant girl fleeing from Libya.

“Hijos naturales de Pizarro” talks about the atrocities committed by the conquistadores against pre-Columbian peoples but uses a light style.

“La baraonda” closes the record with an ironic air, presenting the listener with a role reversal where, during the shipwreck of a boat, the “rich and powerful” are saved by a group of migrants.
