Pop-punk is an Italian thing. Or at least it seems so, given the incredible number of bands within the genre. A scene that I would dare to say is overcrowded, where it's really difficult to emerge and especially to have the right amount of visibility.
A problem that the Five Becomes Four, a young quartet from Ferrara, do not seem to have. After a self-produced first work, they release "Vuoto.Cosmico" through the Genoese label This Is Core. The band being still a work in progress is evident from their choice to present part of the tracklist in their native language and part in English, which obviously raises a big question mark about their real intentions regarding exportation.
Musically, we are faced with a reasonably pleasant album, which strongly pays homage to Yellowcard (not coincidentally, the band's name is inspired by the title of one of their songs), and that at times is rightly raw. Nevertheless, there are positive notes. Firstly, the quality of the songs in English, which are much catchier and more in line with the genre proposed compared to those in Italian. Secondly, their willingness not to completely fossilize on the usual sound patterns. The vocals are pleasant and well-interpreted in both versions, with enjoyable choruses and the upbeat mood created during the listening experience.
"Vuoto.Cosmico" is therefore an unusual album, which on one hand knows how to engage and make its point, and on the other hand has no protective shield against quite evident flaws. It's a continuous alternation of highs for Five Becomes Four, a band that still has a lot to work on to become a leading name in the national pop-punk scene.
