Richard Patrick really has a great voice, which can be intense and harsh at the same time, so he easily adapts to both hard and pure rock songs and some tender ballads like the ones that lately populate his records.
That said, it must be noted that Richard Patrick is not a genius, he's simply a good musician with an excellent voice, and neither is Geno Lenardo, co-author of all the songs and guitarist, a great composer. But ultimately, this album is almost enjoyable to listen to: it starts with a short noisy intro and immediately gives space to the best track of the CD "Welcome to the fold", a direct and appropriately angry single that also contains some nice percussive instrumental parts. Then comes "Captain Blaigh", another hard track but with more electronic influences (Patrick worked with Trent Reznor so evidently something rubbed off) but nothing remarkable. We can say that, after the first track, the CD immediately starts dropping in quality, the tracks are well arranged and played, but they are not very original and follow each other with difficulty, moreover, there isn’t a single track under five minutes, and this is quite tiresome.
Redeemably, the track "Skinny", really beautiful and engaging, and the final "Miss Blue" are genuinely good slow pieces, sincere and thrilling (dedicated to his mother), but then disaster strikes with tracks like "Take a picture," a slow ballad quite suitable as a single, but in the album it lasts almost seven minutes (quite tiresome!); or with songs like "The best thing", no comment needed, it’s simply awful. In short, this album leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, because it is played by good musicians, with an excellent singer and occasionally offers very, very interesting insights, but then mixes them with either clumsy attempts to create beautiful electronic music that results in a mindless pseudo-techno mess or with boring and already heard ballads.
It could have been a great album, instead it settles for being a barely passable record; simply, what a pity!
