THE REVIEW

February 2013. The debut album by FIDLAR is released, self-titled, an American band from Los Angeles.

FIDLAR takes their name from the acronym "Fuck It Dog, Life's A Risk." Literally: "Fuck it dog, life's a risk." Despite this being their debut album, they had already stirred the scene with two EPs where they openly showcased their identity and their conception of music. They play under their guise of skaters and rowdy kids, attending one of their concerts (they'll be in Milan in about a month) means expecting to find drunk people in the stands, the four members spraying beer from the stage almost like Formula 1 drivers (if not for an evident alcoholic difference) and a few classic people out of place with the party and "wild" atmosphere.

We can already notice how the band makes a lot of noise about themselves, and we haven't even talked about the music yet.

Reading the tracklist, I couldn't believe it, I started to negatively prejudge the band for the track titles (and the lyrics, in general, are always on that level). The first track is Cheap Beer already spammed by the band months before. Apart from the title, I'd highlight some poetic lines from the lyrics, like this: "I! Drink! Cheap! Beer! So! Want! Fuck! You!" The music is exactly what you expect from such lyrics and titles, lively and energetic, not very elegant and clean, and from songs about beer, in the end, this is what you expect, a dominating guitar and a strong and hoarse voice. They do not stray from the "bad boys" canon and from the musical ones of Punk. There isn’t a real novelty, but that doesn't mean the music isn't enjoyable, on the contrary. Moving up the tracklist, I would point out White on White with various references taken from the Misfits. The album flows quickly, so it deserves to be listened to again. Max Can't Surf is a breath of fresh air from the young quartet, LDA is yet another song by the band that would make you want to hit the streets and go wild. All the tracks are short but intense, I would also highlight No Waves, softer than the rest of the album's tracks. I would conclude with the last track of the album Cocaine, the only track of a good length (it's divided into two separate parts) and it's also the most elaborate.

In conclusion, I would like to say that these guys don't revolutionize the music world, they are not the first bands to play this genre and live a reckless life, among parties, skateboards, surfing, and beer. In Italy, guys like these could easily aspire to government positions. Although there is no innovation in this album, the music carries you away and absolutely does not bore, after all, FIDLAR live life as if every day were their last. Now, excuse me, but all this talk about beer has made me particularly thirsty.
