Brighton’s own Fatboy Slim, with this track, shakes hands with global recognition.
In 1998, the album "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" churned out several singles that could be considered "hits," but this is undoubtedly THE single par excellence for the DJ: those who have approached his repertoire have surely encountered "The Rockafeller Skank" first, inevitably.
It's also impossible not to have heard it or caught it 'in passing,' given its perpetual presence in various films and games, foremost among them the legendary FIFA '99 (a game with a memorable soundtrack).
Like Underworld and the Chemical Brothers, he managed to intrigue even those not accustomed to Electronic music in general. Not an easy feat.
A perfect Big Beat track with its combination of the aforementioned vocal sample (extracted from a track by rapper Lord Finesse) and that exceptionally Surf-like guitar groove, which in its second part twists into a bad trip between Scat effects and dark slowdowns.
The single also contains two other quite remarkable tracks: "Always Read The Label" with its deep pseudo-Dub basslines and samplings from Public Enemy, and a cheerful Mexican (?) who occasionally repeats "La vida de la sorpresa," and the highly enjoyable and underrated "Tweakers Delight", ruthlessly Rave which leaves you hanging when you see it lasts only 3 minutes and you wish it would last at least three times its current duration.
Go for it, whatever your preferred sound is.
