Fatboy Slim, record-breaking DJ!
In 2002, at the Brighton beach concert, they expected 60,000 spectators: there were 250,000.
Record event, so much so that it even resulted in a death and was never held again.
One wonders why 250,000 people would crowd around mostly to see from afar a small man, already in his forties at the time, put on a couple of vinyl records and raise his hands to the sky.
I’ll answer: Fatboy Slim is the greatest DJ that has ever existed on the face of the earth, I won’t venture to say he’s an excellent musician (electronic music is a much broader world than what Norman Cook does), but at doing the job of a disc jockey, i.e., putting on good music, mixing, sampling, and entertaining people, he is a master.
In Brighton, he offers little of his own, only closing grandly at the end with Star 69 and Bird Of Prey (at the time singles from his latest album, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars), while paying homage to the classics: he starts with Born Slippy Nuxx by Underworld (with echoes of Right Here Right Now at the end) and also inserts the Basement Jaxx with Where's Your Head At.
And so? In just over an hour, everything goes smoothly and is extremely pleasant, party atmosphere but not at all cliché: Fatboy's originality lies a lot in the choice of the playlist, some classics mixed with not at all commercial pieces, but without becoming an event destined for a too sophisticated audience.
Right mix, in short, between class and simple fun.
