  1. What does a good review look like?

Are there any writing rules, a format you suggest? What should I pay attention to when writing?

Every DeReviewer is asked to write a maximum of one editorial page, meaning 60 characters (including spaces and punctuation) per 30 lines. You can easily check the length of your text using the character count function in your word processor: the maximum value should be 60 × 30 = 1,800 characters – the classic editorial page. As a general guideline, based on experience, a good review typically stays around 20 lines, which equals about 1,200 characters (including spaces).
Of course, this is not a strict rule – you can go over or under this indicative limit – but really, try not to exceed 30 lines or 1,800 characters. It’s a good exercise, and it will benefit you in many areas of life.
Every DeReviewer is, by definition, free – not sponsored by record labels or closely monitored by their PR departments. So we ask you to write your review in complete freedom. Every author has a different style, but here are a few tips:

    1. Always keep in mind the rhythm of your writing: your text should flow like a good song. We recommend reading it over and identifying weak points, where the rhythm slows down. Avoid using “off-key” words. A good review should be readable in one breath; the reader's attention should stay high, with no dips in tone. Read other reviews (even outside of DeBaser) and pay close attention to the writing rhythm of your favorite reviewers.
    2. Don’t be afraid to use short sentences: a sentence that goes on and on will lose the reader’s attention and kill the rhythm. No one’s paying you by the meter (at least not yet). Your message should be clear. And you need to be effective.
    3. Be original, but don’t overdo it; readers will learn to recognize your style and tastes and will trust you: that’s DeBaser – a community board made by readers, for readers.
    4. Take care with your style. Poetic license is fine, but proper grammar makes for better reading. And typographic conventions exist for a reason. Also remember that writing for the web is different from writing for print (on the web, people don’t really read – they scan).
You can find great advice on Luisa Carrada’s website, Il mestiere di scrivere.

  2. How can I contact the site managers?

I have a problem/question/something/doubt regarding DeBaser, who can I contact?

Here are the most important email addresses

    • editors@debaser.it for questions concerning reviews, editorial line and the like
    • info@debaser.it for all other questions

  3. How do I insert a video on DeBaser

I see that in the listening section there are often videos. How can I insert one?

    You have two options.

    1. If the video is short (less than 100MB) and in MP4 format
      1. Go to the "Listening" page
      2. Look for the paperclip button and click it
      3. If the upload is successful, a link to the file will appear in the text area where you usually write your message
      4. At this point, you just need to send the "ascolto" by clicking "✔"
    2. If the video is long (first option)
      1. Use a program to compress the video and bring it under 100MB
      2. On your Android phone, you can use Panda Video Compressor, which works well and was discovered by Flo, who truly deserves our thanks!
      3. On your PC—and maybe Mac—you can try using VLC. They say it works, we’re not sure, give it a shot and let us know.
      4. On your iPhone… I have no idea.
    3. If the video is long (second option), or if the video is already on YouTube ©
      1. Find or upload the video to YouTube
      2. On the YouTube video page, click the Share button and copy the link
      3. Then go to the "Ascolti" page and paste the video link into the message text you're about to send

  4. What should the MP3s I send look like?

I see that in reviews and other places on the site it is allowed to submit MP3 files. What should these files be like to avoid copyright infringement?

It should be stated up front that you are responsible for the content you submit, and it is your duty to ensure that no copyright laws are being violated.
That said, here at DeBaser we believe that an audio sample of a work can and should serve to give an idea of the work itself. So, if you submit an MP3 file that’s no longer than 30 seconds, you’re probably not violating any rules.

  5. Can I add an artist or artwork?

I searched and searched, but the work I want to review is not on DeBaser. Can I add it?

Yes, you can. Go to the artist's page and look for the "Add Info" button. If the artist isn't there, you can add them yourself.

  6. How do I manage the emails you send me?

How do I unsubscribe from the newsletter? How do I manage the notifications I receive?

    1. Log in to DeBaser with your username and password
    2. In the top right menu click on "Personal Profile"
    3. At the bottom of the page you will find the buttons that personalize our communications to you.

  7. What is DeRank? How is it calculated?

I saw that users and reviews have associated a score called "DeRank". What is it? How can I increase a user's?

We wrote a formula to try to give importance to users and their votes. When a user votes a review, the review increases or decreases its rank in relation to the rank of the user who voted for it. To increase someone's rank, just love them (go to their page and look for the "love them" button).

  8. Can I copy from DeBaser?

I'm writing a novel in which I mention the album "Vattelapesca" by Tizio, Caio, and Sempronio, and for the sake of completeness, I wanted to include some biographical background. While researching online, I came across your wonderful website, which features a review of the album by PincoPallino. I would like to get in touch with him—possibly through you—in order to request permission to fully quote part of the review, clearly crediting both the source and the author.

We are not authorized to share user data from the site. The easiest way to contact the reviewer PincoPallino is to sign up on DeBaser and send them a private message through the platform. As a general rule, our reviews are published under a Creative Commons license, and can therefore be reused as long as the source (DeBaser.it) and the author (in this case, PincoPallino) are properly credited. However, obtaining the reviewer's direct consent is strongly recommended.

  9. Can I post a review that already exists on another site?

I have a beautiful blog where I post a series of reviews. Can I copy some of these reviews to DeBaser?

No. Only original reviews should be published on DeBaser.

  10. Can I block someone from commenting on my reviews?

It happens to me that the idiot of the moment infests my reviews just because I spoke badly of his mother. I would like the idiot of the moment not to be able to comment on my reviews anymore. How do I do it?

Find the idiot on DeBaser, click on "His feelings". Say you hate him. He will no longer be able to comment on your reviews.

  11. Why the cow?

I was wondering the meaning of that bovine? Is it that indispensable?

    Bovine will be her, cuckold!

  12. How is my privacy guaranteed?

What do you do with my personal data?

We are not interested in your personal data. On DeBaser you are your nickname. The only sensitive data we have is your email and we do not give it to anyone.
We also have a privacy policy. although it is quite outdated
If you have any questions to submit to us, submit them by writing (with confidence) to the address: privacy@debaser.it

  13. How do I report abuse?

If I see that some user is exaggerating and becoming too heavy and/or aggressive, who can I report it to?

On DeBaser there are a lot of charlatans. The spirit is to be frank and direct. Try to take this into account and not to take it too much, DeBaser is a place of words, not of people.
However, if someone should exaggerate, please write (with confidence) to: Info@Debaser.it

  14. Why should I donate?

I've seen the button at the bottom of every page "Donate". Why should I?

DeBaser is the coolest site on the internet, and you want it to always be here, everywhere, cooler than ever, and more of the internet.
So, if you happen to have some extra money lying around and feel like supporting what we’re doing (being cool, on the internet), the button at the bottom of the page lets you gift us some (or even all) of your money.
By doing so, you’ll be different from the rest. Cool, right?

WARNING: Don’t forget to include your DeNickname in the payment description, especially if your PayPal account uses a different email address. Otherwise, how the hell are we supposed to know who you are?

Come on now, click the button at the bottom of the page!

  15. How do I install DeBaser on my phone?

Is there a "DeBaser" app? How can I share my photos to DeBaser from my mobile phone?

There isn’t a real app. But the DeBaser website can be installed on your phone’s home screen, and in this way, you can easily share photos, audio, and links directly on DeBaser...
Check out this video and in two minutes you’ll know exactly how to do it.

  16. How do I connect a listening to a work?

I have noticed that sometimes in my listenings the button "Connect the video to the DeDatabase" appears.
When I click it, however, I often do not find the work or the track.
    What can I do?

To safely hook a work or a track you can use the DeBaser id.
Both on the work page and on the track page you will find this id.
Use it in the search field and the hook will be precise.

P.S.: it is always better to hook the track if it is there. Hook the work only if you do not find the track.
