A milestone of all hardcore punk and American in particular, here it is, marked Washington DC 1982!!!!

It might not mean much to most, but in the good old days, with the help of friends and brothers like Jeff Nelson and Ian MacKaye, these Faith and Void held explosive concerts and released this gem for the young and dynamic Dischord records, the DIY label of Minor Threat that became a symbol of independence from the music business for thousands of dusty-worded American kids fed up with the nonsense proposed by commercial music.

The album consists of 24 tracks, 12 per group, 12 lightning-fast, pure hardcore as God intended.

The Faith open up, with what I would call a classic approach to the material, bare, short, distorted and screamed tracks that bear a strong influence from the masters Minor Threat, either because they belong closely to the same musical scene (and it was much more than a musical scene) or because the singer's name is Alec MacKaye and blood may not be water, anyway they are amazing 30 years after this recording. I'm not going to do a track-by-track because a hardcore album, in my opinion, should be downed in one go like a shot of bourbon, it has more impact.

Now it's Void's turn. The situation changes a bit. These guys must have been a bit of jokers, at least judging by their songs, but I mean jokers in a good way! It starts with "Who are you?" which opens with a guitar intro in pure '70s hard rock style, then shoots into frantic and chaotic hardcore, dying in feedback and John Weiffenbach's strangled voice rasping and screeching! Fantastic! There's a small genius on the 6 strings here by the improbable name of Bubba Dupree, the fact is this guy with all his dissonances and blues nods and his whistles and noises drives me crazy, I'd kiss him on the forehead.

Here are the two bands of this split LP, both amazing: Faith traditionally more hardcore, fast and furious - Void, very fast noisy hardcore with influences that many have called metal but to me, at least on this record, seem more rock-blues.

An immense pleasure.
