THE REVIEW

"Once the sky got stuck and it rained ice for 5 days, the power lines all fell down... I remember coming home in the evening exhausted... I was going to go make music with computers and shit but I couldn't turn them on... I wasn't sure of my ability to reassemble them by the light of 1 candle... I wanted to call somebody but I didn't have anything to say... we've been listening hard to the sounds around us for some clues as what to do... our jobs are about communicating with sound... Our neighborhood is filling up with the nouveau riche... People sitting on fancy couches waiting for their condo's value to rise... While world war five whirls around... every moving day... For An Ice Storm To Last Until Everything Is Right."

Exhaust shares a lot with Godspeed You Black Emperor!: same label (the Canadian Constellation), same openly stated political stance, same beautiful cardboard covers, same hypnotic power... and one of the members, drummer Aidan Girt.
But... Godspeed with YANQUI U.X.O have taken off on their silver fighter and soar in rarefied atmospheres, their music breathes diluted in space, tense, suspended, and majestic.

ENREGISTREUR, on the other hand, crashes to the ground, Exhaust are trapped in a house, imprisoned by a snowstorm, "forced" to explore electronic sounds without electricity, in environments rendered gloomy by claustrophobic silences, interrupted by disturbing creaks, and crackling short circuits.
9 tracks of pure and icy noise, warmed only by incomprehensible voices, only by a bass clarinet, only by a drum set. Shining...
