First of all, I would like to clarify one thing: I labeled this album as nu-metal... well, that's not exactly the case. The fact is that it's a truly diverse album, incorporating influences from metal, gothic, all the way to classical and operatic music; the entire album is a blend of piano melodies and distorted guitars.
The track that brought the band into the public eye, making them the phenomenon of the year, is "Bring Me To Life". This song closely resembles Linkin Park and is, perhaps, the only truly nu-metal piece; it features rapper Paul McCoy from 12 Stones, who performs a nice duet with the extraordinary Amy Lee, the young "dark-lady" singer and leader of the group.
In my opinion, she is the strong point of Evanescence: her voice perfectly blends with both the harder tracks of the album, like "Going Under", and the melodic ones, among which is the beautiful "My Immortal", a piano and vocal ballad included along with "Bring Me To Life" in the Daredevil movie soundtrack.
On the same wave as the latter is "Hello", and finally, I really liked the last track, "Whisper": it encapsulates all the elements of their music, with a certain leaning towards gothic-metal.
In conclusion, in my opinion, Evanescence can go far, for a debut album, it couldn't have gone better, having captured the attention of worldwide stages. However, now they will need to follow it up to fully establish their worth.
From Tourniquet onwards, the music changes; Amy Lee’s voice takes a back seat, and the guitars take center stage.
It is a pity that some people can label a group based on a single extract from their first album... beware, you might have unpleasant surprises!
"Going Under"... presents gothic and metal influences with beautiful interplay between guitar and piano.
"Bring Me To Life" was Evanescence’s biggest hit, showcasing a fantastic metal-influenced chorus.
