After the southern gothic success of "Preacher's Daughter", Hayden Anhedonia (Ethel Cain) returns with "Perverts" (89 minutes), a bold project that marks a clear shift in style towards a sharp industrial, drone, and dark ambient sound.

This work is a true "listening challenge," a dark immersion into an industrial hell painted by Ethel Cain as the limbo of the perverse, tormented souls who find peace in repression.

The record is flooded with drones, buzzing, and rising suspense, with sonic "jumpscares" like the distorted recitation of the hymn "Nearer My God to Thee" that opens the track "Perverts," followed by brown noise and spectral voices. There are also more accessible tracks: "Punish" and "Vacillator" offer minimalist ’90s rock ballads, song skeletons reminiscent of previous work, or even Cigarettes After Sex. "Housofpsychoticwomn" tortures the listener with a muffled, repeated "I love you," while the endless "Pulldrone" creates a hypnotic climax of drones and electric violins.

The album, intentionally disturbing and made up of uncomfortable frequencies, is at the same time boring and fascinating. Once you overcome the tortuous listening experience, it all ends with the gentle and peaceful closing "Amber Waves."
