THE REVIEW

Nick Bindeman's psychedelic streak is certainly not limited to the Jackie-O Motherfucker. The Portland guitarist founded the project Eternal Tapestry in 2005 together with his drummer brother Jed and guitarist Dewey Mahood. They were later joined by bassist Krag Likins and saxophonist Ryan Carlile, forming the current quintet.

While the sound of Jackie-O Motherfucker predominantly showed affinities with the historic San Francisco scene, the psychedelic side of the eternal ornaments leans more on an atmospheric and spatial base, a sort of cerebral ambient taking inspiration from the Floydian secret box to the cosmic couriers, associated with a guitar style inspired by Sonny Sharrock.

Produced at the beginning of 2011, "Beyond The 4th Door" begins with the hypnotic guitars of "Ancient Echoes", reminiscent of the final part of "Suche & Liebe" by Ash Ra Tempel and the style of early Gottsching, but also of certain Montgomeryan Oceania experiments. In contrast, "Galactic Derelict" stands out from the rest of the album, a kind of Hawkwind space ritual where the guitars are more acid and the drums are more prominent in the improvisation. Listening to "Reflections In A Mirage" and "Time Winds Through a Glass, Clearly" (halfway between Raga-Rock and the "garden" of Popol Vuh) gives the impression of being inside the cover, in the desert, blinded by the sun, with optical illusions recurring from every side, an ecstatic sensation where you also find yourself with a lot of annoying sand in your shoes. But if you're used to all that, enjoy this gem by Thrill Jockey.

The band delivers hypnotic, spatial soundscapes with clear influences from Floyd, Hawkwind, and Popol Vuh.
