It's Not Something but It Is Like Whatever

Imagine having traveled 1000 km with four people inside a Punto...imagine having crossed the Salerno-Reggio Calabria right on the days when snow and landslides forced you to take improbable detours...imagine arriving exhausted in Bologna and spending the night on a mattress thrown on the floor (courtesy of a friend who hosted me). Imagine having done all this to see the Mogwai, a band that has marked my growth, musically and otherwise, and that, even though they are not what they used to be for me, I wanted to see live at least once in my life. So here we finally are at Estragon...the first one to find on stage is a singer-songwriter with a voice and electric guitar that went well with a beer taken to quench the thirst. Then here they are...the ones you don't expect, the Errors...

One of the most beautiful ways to discover a band (even better if instrumental) is to find them unexpectedly on a stage in front of you. I had never even heard of them, and already halfway through the first track I’m asking my concert neighbors "do you know who these are"? Yes, because Errors are a band with a strange musical mix that intrigues, entertains, and fascinates at the same time; "It's Not Something But It Is Like Whatever" is perhaps what would result from an improbable collaboration between the distorted guitars of Explosions In The Sky, and the techno beats of an Apparat...listening to the CD, it might seem like an off-the-wall comparison, but live I assure you that this is the impression they give. Seeing them perform a track like "Salut! France" in which the guitarists romantically plunge onto the guitars while next to them another member delivers a true DJ performance complete with turntables is something that initially leaves you curious but then melts your legs and without realizing it you find yourself moving to the rhythm of a post-math-techno-rock (!!!!), an ironic label of course.

Then consider that on the same album there are tracks like "Toes", a math piece with evident Battlesian influences, and "Still Game", a beautiful Mogwai-esque track yet with undeniable originality, and all the other tracks, none of which aren’t worth listening to, you realize that what you are listening to is not the bizarre experiment of four novices playing with music, but the versatility in action of talented musicians who have managed to innovate a genre overflowing with clone bands of the great pioneers, but where notable novelties are rare. In my very humble opinion, Errors are one of these rare bands, maybe the album is a bit unripe and not exactly homogeneous, maybe it is just a sketch, but it is definitely a noteworthy album where originality is not lacking and where the contaminations between genres sometimes considered too distant are really successful. Errors make a kind of Party Post-Rock, one of those bands that loves to make people dance with quality music, doesn't like people entering a reflective stasis, but prefers to move legs instead of making you fall into mental oblivion, tracks like "Pump" can easily fit into a radio placed next to the bed while we relax and enjoy their musical games; but their natural place is at one of those connoisseur parties where you want to dance to the rhythm of good music.

...maybe I've said too little?? I won't tell you more anyway... I'd just water it down unnecessarily... listen to them and tell me...
