Mediterranean Iceland

A surprise, albeit up to a point. A collaboration that will (probably) raise more than a few doubts: Tazenda, with a new singer after the untimely passing of Andrea Parodi, after collaborations with Pierangelo Bertoli and Fabrizio de André, now release a song with Eros Ramazzotti. Perhaps legitimate doubts, also because it is increasingly clear that the course of current Italian music is in the "recovery" of illustrious works, grand (and more or less authentic) tributes and acknowledgments to "artistic fathers." From Morgan to Afterhours to La Crus, it seems that the "cover d'auteur" is almost an obligatory credibility step, an essential maturing act. Perhaps (in some cases) an attempt to "refresh" one's image. Something similar applies to the "reinterpretations" of old and new pop hits in an "alternative" key ("Su Di Noi" reinterpreted in an "ethno alternative" version à la "Tambours Du Bronx" is exemplary in its own way) ethno-popular music, sometimes shaped around the linguistic idiom (ancient Sardinian on which from the first album Tazenda have been working with dedication and impeccable philological expertise), music, the "ethnic" (a somewhat simplistic term) contaminated by definition, and the "d'auteur" (distant in time and therefore more fascinating) seem at the current moment to provide material to "pop" in all its wide meanings and at all levels.

Having said that, I believe that the motto " listen without prejudice" should be applied to all creative forms, also because there is nothing inherently wrong in these synergies between "masters" and "students," between "past" and "present." Because we would miss an opportunity: the song in question is truly very, very beautiful. Poetic, graceful, filled with ethno-linguistic lyricism structured in the form of an anthem, inspired, with a melody and arrangement perfectly in line with Tazenda's best creations, with the typical breath of antiquity that in the linguistic-musical suggestion evoked by this rock-ballad of the splendid Tyrrhenian island materializes in scenic, marine, wind-carved rock impressions and skies filled with "baroque clouds." The collaboration with the Roman singer-songwriter, furthermore the leading exponent of Italian Song, as known (and appreciated) in the Anglo-American market, i.e., the latest offspring of melodrama (from Giacomo Puccini to Domenico Modugno to Claudio Villa, with the subsequent contamination of rock and pop imported from English-speaking lands).

It would be a mistake, in my opinion, to criticize either of the "actors" in this union: like other splendid Italian realities (Sud Sound System for example), Tazenda too cannot help but confront Pop Song, otherwise they would be making pure and (albeit very noble) self-referential ethnic music; on the other hand, Eros Ramazzotti, (my position on the accusations of "restyling" is now clear) besides intelligently interpreting his "pop surplus value" has the (commercial) merit: no one should feel offended, of having brought back to the limelight of appropriate stages a splendid group that deserves much, much more.

Welcome back, Tazenda.
