Ermanno Olmi (1931–2018) was an Italian film director noted for humanist, often rural and faith-inflected cinema; his L'albero degli zoccoli won the Palme d'Or in 1978.

Born July 24, 1931; died May 7, 2018. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1978 for L'albero degli zoccoli. Frequently worked with non-professional actors, explored rural life, Catholic and humanist themes, and sometimes used documentary-like realism.

DeBaser reviews emphasise Olmi's humanist cinema: slow, contemplative works rooted in rural life and faith. L'albero degli zoccoli is repeatedly singled out (Palme d'Or 1978). Torneranno i prati is read as a documentary-like meditation on WWI. Cento Chiodi divided reviewers but is noted for its moral-ethical urgency.

For:Fans of Italian cinema, contemplative and historical films, and readers interested in faith-inflected, humanist storytelling.
