But come on...why choose "Wild!" to talk about Erasure? Well, because trying to talk about such a significant group in the pop landscape of the last 20 plus years requires talking about the product that best represented elegance and style of an era unjustly disparaged or felt as tacky (at least musically speaking). "Wild!" wasn't as successful an album as "Chorus" or "The Innocents," yet in its 39 minutes it remains compact and elegant... right from the artwork with a photo/painting by Pierre et Giles. But the songs?! How are the songs? Undoubtedly ahead of their time. You may or may not appreciate Erasure, but the fact remains that they were unique in their musical offering. Take "Drama" with its Valkyrie-like pace or the lively "La Gloria". Also not to be missed are the more introspective moments of "How Many Times" and "Piano Song". But the masterpiece remains that "You Surround Me" which, in the extended version (worth finding), offers a whirlwind of synth emotions that I believe few others have proposed. Ultimately, "Wild!" is the album of reflection on Erasure. No camp or chart tricks but analog art that is good for the heart and brain. The next stop will then be that "Erasure" of 1995 that some of you have already worthily honored on these pages.
