I had lost track of them, either because of the thousand listens available every day, or because their latest albums, including compilations and re-coverings of covers, hadn't impressed me much. I thought they were in artistic decline or that the genre had become too heavy, having reached the end for the masses, without a real reason to exist anymore.
Instead, I was really surprised by this "Nightbird" a nice piece of work with 11 songs all analog-sound and beginner-style melodies, refined with a pure techno-pop rhythm, which, with the unmistakable and unique voice of the great Andy Bell, weave this alchemy of mid-range sounds that enter straight into your soul and body without control, inevitably making you bounce and dream.
I hadn't felt this much compositional enthusiasm since the days of "Chorus", and the great Vince (Clarke), who has long since forgotten being an ex in the history of this genre, managed in a couple of years, with the assistance of fans via the internet, to put together a wonderful electropop piece of work, without being banal in the melodies.
The entire album sounds wonderful, the tracks are almost all on the same level of quality and aesthetics, yet songs like "Sweet Surrender", with its very Kraut-harmonium European anthem sounds, "Breathe", simple but pleasant, "Don't Say You Love Me" and "Because Our Love Is Real", beautiful pieces reminiscent of the splendid "Chorus", "All This Time Still Falling Out Of Love", almost campy, but with a very gay-club vibe, "Here I Go Impossible Again", intense and romantic, "No doubt" and "Let's Take One More Rocket To The Moon", splendid masterpieces of harmony, finishing with the sweet "I Bet You're Mad At Me" and all the others that flow more or less on the same frequency.
Surely the success of the late eighties, this time they will have to forget about, but nevertheless, they gave it their all and it is right that they be rewarded for the effort. An album that lovers of the genre absolutely must have, perhaps a little less so for others! To the masses the difficult verdict.
