EPMD is a rap group from New York formed by Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith. The acronym EPMD stands for "Erick and Parrish Making Dollars". In 1988, their debut album "Strictly Business" was released, now recognized as a classic of the old school and listed in the charts of numerous music magazines (like Rolling Stone and Source, to name a few).
The album has a distinctly Old Skool sound, with funk bases that would later be sampled by many other producers. The album opens with "Strictly Business" (the title track) which reprises the theme of Bob Marley's "I Shoot The Sheriff", though in Eric Clapton's version. It then continues with "I'm Housin'", "Let The Funk Flow", and "You Gots To Chill", high-energy funk tracks that certainly won't leave you indifferent... The beautiful "It's My Thing" is the first track recorded by the group a year before the album's release. With "You're A Customer", it transitions to a more Electro sound that continues until the end of the album; listening to it, you'll surely recognize the base (since it has been sampled by many other DJs). It's also worth mentioning "DJ K La Boss", the essential track dedicated to the DJ, full of exciting scratches and cuts.
In conclusion, I can only recommend this "classic" which should certainly not be missing from any B-Boy's collection. I also recommend it to those who are just getting into rap, as it is not particularly challenging and is easy to listen to.
