The Profile

Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002 by guitarist/composer Mark Jansen after his departure from After Forever. Fronted by mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, the group blends orchestras and choirs with heavy riffing and growls across acclaimed albums including The Phantom Agony, Consign to Oblivion, The Divine Conspiracy and Design Your Universe.

Formed in the Netherlands in 2002 by Mark Jansen; early name Sahara Dust before adopting Epica. Lead vocalist Simone Simons joined in the early years. Notable line-up additions include drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek (2007) and guitarist Isaac Delahaye (2009). Early releases were on Transmission Records, later albums on Nuclear Blast. Known for large-scale orchestral/choral arrangements and international touring, including the orchestral live set The Classical Conspiracy.

DeBaser’s reviews chart Epica from their dark, orchestral debut through bigger choirs, heavier guitars and the DYU/TDC rivalry. The Score gets panned, while live/DVD efforts and core albums earn praise. Simone’s vocals and the growl/clean interplay are constant flashpoints. Overall sentiment: engaged, divided, and very Epica.
