My continuation of revisiting the albums of the greatest Milanese singer-songwriter, in the hope that someone, not too far in the future, will decide to reissue them on CD. Honestly, I'm not very hopeful, but hoping doesn't cost anything.
"Ci vuole orecchio" was one of his best-selling LPs, thanks also to a couple of catchy songs that Enzo, the sly fox, would occasionally record.
"Musical" is a beautiful piece, very piano-focused, with lyrics in everyday language and phrases that almost seem tossed out there randomly, and it’s a track inspired by His Eminence Paolo Conte, whom Enzo had known and visited before the making of the album "Foto ricordo".
The title track, "Ci vuole orecchio" is clearly a metaphor, talking about the difficulties for a musician and singer in the recording studio And there we are, like fools, trying, but with the orchestra, you can't go wrong. Why? BECAUSE IT TAKES AN EAR! YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE WHOLE PACKAGE IMMERSED DIPPED INSIDE THE BUCKET! YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL, A LOT, RATHER MUCH, TO DO CERTAIN THINGS, YOU NEED AN EAR!
.
"Fotoricordo... il mare" is probably a leftover from the previous album, noticeable from the minimal and depressing atmosphere of the song, unlike the rest of the album, which is very orchestrated and in some cases, quite amused.
Amused is the inevitable cover of Conte’s, "La sporca vita", while the enjoyment comes with the entertainment of "Silvano", written with early partners Cochi Ponzoni and Renato Pozzetto (Silvano, non-valevole ciccioli, Silvano, mi hai lasciato sporcandomi...
).
But my favorite of the album is definitely Quello che canta Onliù, sung in a laid-back style and a bit out of tune, with a memorable chorus (Go right to the end of the square, hear Onliù singing, see if there's still the one who sings Onliùùùùùùùùùhhh, go right to the end of the square, get him to sing to you. But first, make sure that the one who sings is really Onliùùùùù!
, fantastic!)
"Si vede" is a melancholic song about the end of a love, while there’s a final comeback (in some albums Enzo has revisited pieces from his older repertoire in a new guise). "Il dritto" is a song that dates back about ten years prior, a piece about a character living day by day, amidst parties and pasta and wine chilled like at the cabaret.
Another album from the singer-songwriter-doctor that would be useful if it could be listened to by today's audience and so I end with the usual (although by now a bit outdated) appeal: REISSUE THIS RECORD!
‘Ci vuole orecchio’ finally sees him at his highest levels. Very high.
‘Silvano’ is a lexical masterpiece, as well as musical, with phrases that deeply resonate.
