Seeing the new Enigma album on the shelves, the first thing I said to myself was “look at how strong the cover is.” A sparse, if not nonexistent, artwork that is inviting and magnetic. If I had known that the cover was just trying to mask the emptiness inside, my wallet would certainly be much fuller.
I do not enjoy writing reviews aimed at bashing albums, but this time I feel a moral duty to warn everyone against wasting their money (if you really want to spend, spend wisely, right?).
This album absolutely has no substance, it lacks interesting elements, it's as boring as can be, and it's fake ambient, fake disco, and fake gothic… It is, in short, an album planned at the drawing board, but poorly planned. I don't know what Cretu's intentions were, but rather than an innovative album, it seems like a mishmash of genres put together without any logic. The lowest point of the album is "Incognito" which starts off poorly and—if possible—ends even worse.
Truly a misstep for a band that has otherwise had some truly great moments, like The screen behind the mirror, which had already mixed the gothic aura with almost "dance-like" music.
This time they have disappointed greatly, for no reason. It's lacking ideas, lacking originality. I would have preferred an almost-clone of “Le roi est mort…” or “MCMXC ad”. Stay away from this release, believe me. However, if you want to harm yourself, I won’t be the one to stop you…
