Being born, growing up, and living in Forlì has its pros and cons (as in every city in Italy).
For a person like me, however, it turned out to be a real stroke of luck. Setting aside the cons (which I don't think would interest you), the first pro that comes to mind (and come to think of it, perhaps the only one) is definitely having a rather unusual music scene compared to the rest of the Italian peninsula.
When I say "unusual," I mean something like these Endless Inertia.
These guys, together with my fellow townsmen La Quiete and Raein, form my personal triad; which not only invented a genre, but also canonized it for the rest of the world. Formed more or less in 2005 and disbanded around 2007 (but I'm not sure, anyway, they are already long gone), the Endless Inertia are undoubtedly the least known of my mythical triad: perhaps because they arrived a bit later, or perhaps because of their short-lived existence. Their legacy, however, is of undeniable value: this "Oktjabr Novembre" (I have no idea what this absurd title is supposed to mean) is definitely a little gem of screamo (the real one, don't mistake it with some kind of music, folks), on par with works by masters like Ampere and Portraits Of Past.
It's strange how in Italy this music is snubbed, ignored, while abroad the bands from our country reach almost a cult status. Especially because these guys really have something to say, or better yet, something to SCREAM. More or less cryptic lyrics make the 8 shards of the album even more schizophrenic; no screamo band reminds me of Converge in sound like Endless Inertia. However, erroneously, they remind me more of their reflective side than their violence. The opener "Espiazione Dell'Incomunicabilità" is enough to understand the band's intentions. An emotional spiral to which it is impossible to remain indifferent.
Helping to raise them to a cult status (at least here in Forlì, but I'm sure also in other parts of the world) was surely the label (equally cult) Sons Of Vesta. For the writer, this Sons Of Vesta is the most important label in Italy. Naturally, I'm speaking in the ultra mega extra underground domain (which is what you, my dear Debaser user, enjoy). Between 2005 and 2010, it released about forty 'releases', each more tantalizing than the last: besides our triad, I'll mention my other fellow townsmen Le Tormenta (we're talking grind/crust hardcore here) and Neil On Impression (the best Italian post-rock band, bar none) and so much other good stuff (if you want more info, go here).
I feel like recommending Endless Inertia to everyone even though I know very well they are not for everyone. Give it a try. Roughly it works like this: if you're angry, this music will make you even angrier; if you're happy, it will make you a better person. Obviously, if you manage to understand the "sung" lyrics with raucous screams, you're already halfway there. It's screamo that abroad is known as Emo Violence. Yes, my dear Debaser user, from Romagna after the flatbread and Raoul Casadei has also emerged this emo violence; and don't jinx yourself just because I wrote the word "emo," be a man and move on, the disgusting things in life are certainly something else.
In conclusion: can a violent and noisy music touch the right chords of our hearts to evoke emotions? Maybe with the help of some non-trivial and deeper lyrics than everything radio, MTV, and the likes offer us? The difficult verdict is for posterity.
And just to clarify: I am not emo. I might be an alcoholic, a bum, a loser, one with too many tattoos to find a decent job, a stinker, an emo; but damn, I am certainly not a pornstar.
