The Empty Dialogue show great promise.
This four-member band (David Berardi guitar/vocals, Antonio Casagrande bass/vocals, Pablo Prioretti guitar, Anton Nachinkin drums) hailing from Fabriano (AN), presents a fairly hard alternative rock, at times close to metal. But above all, the Empty Dialogue has that something extra. It's a band with a lot of road ahead, but the foundations for creating original music that is neither copied nor fake (unlike the vast majority of today's bands) are definitely in place.
This demo (recorded at the beginning of August at Pressplay Records studios) is their first studio recording effort and consists of 3 tracks:
-"Lettera Morta" - intro in 5/8 with progressive addition of all instrumentalists, very energetic verses with a good balance between the instruments. The chorus (in Italian) builds up energy that then spills into the verse. The very short bridge leading to the guitar solo is unexpected.
-"Le Strutture" - after the bass introduction, the verse is Italian alternative rock at 100%. The strength of the song, however, is the chorus ("baby stay here, troppe parole piovono dal cielo e il mare si allunga dentro me, dentro me sono solo un'ombra ormai, sono solo un'ombra ormai!") underneath which there is a beautiful lyrical counterpoint performed by the guitar. After the second chorus, the bridge ("Don't forsake me") is a crescendo leading to a powerful riff with a call and response between the two guitars. Then the tension momentarily subsides and Berardi sings "Sei hai paura di sognare ti devi risvegliare, nessuno ha mai detto che era facile volare, certo è orrendo sanguinare, vorresti scomparire, ma tu prendi come spunto ciò che sembra finire" before another chorus, this time with lyrics in English.
-"Violenza Genera Violenza" - a song that performs particularly well live, highly effective in its simplicity and brevity, very aggressive and wild in the verses (sung by Casagrande), more composed (not in the lyrics!) in the choruses. The bridge is beautiful, and here's the text:
"Violenza generata da una grande insicurezza
Incapace di cambiare lo squallore e la tristezza
Mai scivolare, mai scomporsi, mai scovare
Il motivo originario che ti pone su un altare
Studiata scalata sociale scolastica
Una competizione che ti ha reso ormai di plastica
Prendi la mia mano, se vuoi ti farò vedere
Un incanto che va oltre l'acquitrino dell'avere
Perenne, pudore, paralisi psicosociale
Rigido ritieni di esser re del reale
Avere 10, avere 9, avere 8 avere 6
Vita ti ama solo se fai veder quello che sei!"
In all three tracks, what emerges most is the attempt to stand out from the crowd. More than instrumental technique (which certainly isn't lacking), the core of Empty Dialogue's music is originality. Perhaps these three songs won't revolutionize rock, but they surely are a breath of fresh air for those seeking bands with a bit of uniqueness. This demo reveals only a part of the energy that Empty Dialogue can unleash (go see them live if you can!), but above all, it shows considerable potential, a great margin for improvement (especially regarding vocals), and a strong desire to create something personal. And that's no small feat.
