American indie rock band from Chicago formed in 1983 by Rick Rizzo and Janet Beveridge Bean, long-running with Douglas McCombs on bass. Praised by critics, consistently underrated, and known for guitar-driven records from Prairie School Freakout to Zeroes and Ones and Works For Tomorrow.

Chicago-origin indie/alternative rock band active since 1983. Prairie School Freakout (1988, Amoeba Records) was recorded in July 1987 in one six-hour overnight session, yielding a lo-fi sound. Later signed to Atlantic Records, which dropped them after two albums. Collaborated with Yo La Tengo. Members’ projects include Freakwater (Janet Bean), Tortoise (Douglas McCombs), and work with Red Red Meat (Rick Rizzo). Continued output includes Zeroes and Ones (2006), Works For Tomorrow (2015), and Since Grazed.
