Sometimes memories resurface without our intentional prompting, imposing themselves with their own spontaneous will, unstoppable... It happens to everyone, perhaps while we are busy with our own tasks when a song we haven't heard in years (centuries) captivates us with its melody, taking us back in time to memories of a love or an episode in our life we thought was forgotten forever, yet it was right there, just beneath the surface of our thoughts, still vivid and radiant... or sometimes it's a smell, an aroma, that has the same effect, a taste, anything that, stimulating our senses, awakens our memories... it happened to me while searching in the used section of a record store.
I was there, bored, flipping through soulless album covers when my eye fell upon it, it was like seeing an old photo kept on a bedside table for so long and now lost but never forgotten... Elegy, "Supremacy": two words that may not mean much to many but for those who, like me, love this music (and in particular prog metal), they hide an entire world.
It was 1994 and they had already released the beautiful "Labyrinth Of Dreams," but no one would have ever expected such a masterpiece, we're talking about the only album that truly approached the magnificence and perfection of "Images And Words" by Dream Theater.
The cover, beautiful, seems to flow from the brush of a futuristic Dali but no less mad and brilliant for it, the songs... well, those are pure art: the grandiosity of "Windows Of The World", the melancholy of "Erase Me", the perfection of "Poisoned Hearts", the power of "Supremacy"... all gems nestled in a perfect jewel built from emotions, crafted by magnificent musicians.
The remaining songs are also diverse and stunning pieces of soul meant to be lived by the listener.
Albums like this are no longer made; other genres were born and died, sacrificed to the trends from which they originated, sending into oblivion everything that preceded them... but the artistry of this masterpiece is etched in its grooves, available to all who dare to live an extraordinary and unforgettable emotion.
