"Lore of Nén" is a beautiful album, the third by the Teutonic band, excluding an EP. This is the current lineup of the group:
Joran Elane: Flutes, vocals;
Katrin: Violin, viola, vocals;
Simon: Violin, clarinet;
Skaldir: Guitar, classical scores, vocals;
Nico: Keyboards, vocals.
Conveying such sensations is a gift that folk or Celtic music can proudly claim. And Joran Elane, enchanting mermaid, wafts evocative, ecstatic melodies from her flute, accompanied by a procession of drums and strings and neoclassical orchestral arrangements resonating and affirming the concept; unveiling landscapes bordered by alpine mountains and woods; clear streams or ripples from steam or winter, delving into shadowed vegetation; combined with more sentimental and amorous content, subtly expressed through the candid exposure made by the lyrics, which conclude the artistic foundation.
Elane's ethereal and breathy intonation is often accompanied by the other band members (not as skilled in soothing and calming) in singing the lyrics divided between English and German intertwined in the melody, which often is nothing more than a reinterpretation of the traditional, carefully filtered so that the general flow does not suffer from dissonance.
The songs that struck me the most are "Nen ar tasar" where two graceful voices follow each other in the verses like leaves in the wind, contrasted by a third higher one; or "Open arms", where a male voice duets with Elane; "My brightest star" a slow song sung solemnly. But even the instrumental tracks are moving and imaginative to the point that it is not possible to identify who excels among the musicians. Last not least is the subtle rock connotation that occasionally emerges to support the strings, always emulating echoing bagpipes and zampognas that are not present. And it is for this reason that the album stands out from the context: having something more. If one does not stop at appearances, where the lyrics might seem trivial; looking further, to the melody, the caressing and ephemeral music, to Elane's splendid voice: elements that make the album unmissable.
