King Crimson - The Letters - Marquee (1971) SBD

Last night we were discussing "Islands," and dear @[bonny99] didn’t find "Ladies of the Road" and this "The Letters" on par with the rest. Indeed, while the former might not be to your taste—and I could even confirm that—it could be argued that this track can be considered as much a masterpiece as Formentera Lady and the title track. It's charming and possesses a strong personality, even though it’s very essential and deliberately harsh in its orchestration. It's natural that everyone maintains their own opinions, but it reflects the despair of its lyrics:

"with goose quills and silver knife
he carved a poisoned pen
and wrote to his lover's wife
'Your husband's seed has impregnated my flesh.'"

that corrupt letter lay on her face
like on that of a leper
the wife, with a frozen throat
ran into the day with tear-filled eyes.

pinned to nails of ice
and ravaged by a fire
