There were many bands that tried to mix funk, noise blasts, and industrial noir vocals (like the early Hunters and Collectors). However, none reached the level of The The. Matt Johnson has such a cool voice that he could have made an album with Clock DVA or the Pop Group... it would have been exciting.

In comparison, the Sisters of Mercy were making pop AHAH
Oh, by the way, the Virgin Prunes, even though they hinted a lot at macabre theatricality, I find them more caught up in the clichés of the genre, both with their very first noisy dark punk works and with "If I die, I die."
