a top-notch interpreter, a modest composer. an album, grace, of remarkable craftsmanship. but jeff still had so much work to do, it's a shame he couldn't. other than that, he has undeniably been mythologized and overrated, as often happens to deceased artists.

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band

I have to say it, he played with me. I thought he was inaudible, unmusical. Quite the opposite; with careful and unbiased listening, he revealed himself in all his genius and that of the magic band. An immense artist and Trout Mask Replica is simply brilliant; let's not forget, however, a more conventional album that is certainly just as successful, if not superior: Safe as Milk.
