Frank Zappa Weasels Ripped My Flesh

Is it the fault of Zappa's fans for taking their idol too seriously? Perhaps, but the fact is that lately it has become a trend to take a jab at Zappians... and so the good people of Don Rodrigo pop up everywhere to make fun of them.

Well, whatever, in the end I gave Off the Wall a 3 and you gave it a 4, so we're not that far apart... Plus, I noticed you're de-aming me :D

trauma: in the case of sgt.pepper I think it’s a 4-star album, but if someone gives it 5, I’m not scandalized at all, since it’s still an important album, even if not as much as Veltet Underground & Nico.

But I never said that the album isn't "suitable for its environment," heaven forbid; actually, it's just perfect... but is it enough for an album to be perfectly fitting into a pre-existing genre to deserve 5 stars? The first two tracks of "Off the Wall" and also the last one are incredibly catchy and danceable hits, perfect for the disco scene of the late '70s, and even now they get a lot of people moving... and ultimately, that's the purpose of the album... so from this perspective, it has achieved its goal. But is that enough to warrant 5 stars? It depends on the criteria each person has; according to my criteria, no.

You see, you talk about "standards" that a specific genre "provides"... for me, if a record strictly follows the "standard" of a genre that is considered crystallized, it performs a craft operation that has nothing to do with art. Can you perhaps say that "154" follows a standard expected by a genre? I don't have a preference for one genre over another; I don't divide music into genres (except in some cases for convenience), but I evaluate each record without relying on what I should expect from the genre it is presumed to belong to. Often the best records are those that cannot be labeled in any domain.

In my opinion, he was an extraordinary dancer, and also a great talent as a showman in general. Moreover, he worked with an excellent producer like Quincy Jones, who built lavish arrangements for his hits and beyond, which helped him a lot in selling his image, especially in the music industry... however, as a musical artist, he was never, in my view, genius, except for rare cases, and the influence he had as an icon spawned monsters like the boy bands mentioned by psycho and other similar abominations.

I evaluate records universally, without considering genres. Precisely because I don’t discriminate against any genre a priori, despite my musical tastes (and I’ll tell you that I like several tracks by Michael Jackson, some even from the same "Off the Wall"). If a record deserves 5 stars to me, it deserves them from my point of view regardless of whether it belongs to one realm or another. I compared "Off the Wall" with 4 albums released in the same year, 1979, thus products of the same historical period; it is undoubtedly true that they are of different genres, but I don’t believe that this prevents us from making a comparative evaluation between them.

dictionary, the guy who accused him of being touched is now 29 years old and confessed 3 days ago that he lied to get money, he admitted that nothing was true, just for the record... that said, I don't understand how this album can be rated a 5 when in the same year "154" by Wire, "Fear of Music" by Talking Heads, "Unknown Pleasures" by Joy Division, and "Entertainment!" by Gang of Four were released. If we give "Off the Wall" 5 stars, we should at least give those albums 12.

The Beatles' Help?? Out of 12 albums they've made, there will be at least 6 that are clearly superior to that one. I agree on Are You Experienced.

And who said that it's essential to go through those groups? In fact, the opposite is true, because to appreciate DT, it's enough to know the classical style elements of rock. And I know very well that post-rock is often repetitive and self-referential; just listen to how many clones there are of Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky... but here we weren't talking about post-rock in general. Slint and Tortoise are very different and original artists, unlike many of their so-called "descendants." The point was that those who listen to and appreciate DT are usually individuals who see music in a certain way, quite formalized and canonized. Period.
