Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one laughing; in fact, just to give you an example, some time ago on a guitarists' forum, they opened a topic specifically to make fun of his performance at the G3. And if you want to check, I believe that even on accordo.it (a site for experienced guitarists) they share my opinion. However, this is not meant to denigrate him, because, for instance, I really love his album "Odissey" (perhaps because it's more oriented towards song structure); I just wanted to be honest.

Hi Ashanti, it seems to me that you play guitar in a punk band. To clarify, even the four chords (or power-chords) that you play are a result of technical skill, as a lack of technique wouldn't allow you to play anything; the presence of technique, therefore, does not pose a danger to expressiveness and originality, but rather, if used well, it could amplify the results. I hope the concept is clear to you.

never mind, I have all the CDs and DVDs of Vai...

So, you probably haven't seen the DVD because Vai put on an amazing concert, especially when he was sitting with the three-neck guitar; Satriani was just average; Malmsteen during the solo part wasn’t too bad, neglecting the fact that when he spun his Strat around his belly it caused quite a bit of laughter... The highlight (or should I say the lowlight) comes during the final jam... I especially recommend watching and listening during "Rockin' in the Free World" after the verses, the first solos: first Yngwie’s, who does an exaggerated sweep that’s completely out of place, and right after that, Steve Vai’s, which moves me to no end.

Did he spice up the show? But he made a fool of himself! Come on!

He drank a lot, he died at 46 from a failed liver transplant... As soon as the news broke, all Irish TV programs were interrupted, as well as the BBC.

Yes, unfortunately he left us in 1995, he was a legend, very dynamic.

In the meantime, if your friend has a limited view of music, appreciating only a part of it, it means nothing; and come on, it’s like saying that all Moroccans are drug dealers just because you've seen one in the gardens... this is why I say it’s an exaggeration... basically, what I want to say is that you shouldn't generalize and understand that there are plenty of people who use technique as a means to write beautiful songs and to give shape to their own thoughts; it’s not just about the techies who take music as a sport.

Yes, but "peace" does not mean flattening the discussion to "my idea-your idea" and everyone thinks in their own way; one can also debate cordially... Here, no one wants to wage war on anyone... And who ever said that using technique means listening to music in order to catch the solo, the scale, etc... it's a forced interpretation full of prejudices...
