The three things you mentioned are great, especially the Van der Graaf, but you keep stopping at the '70s.

I particularly recommend the song "Magnet Pulls Through" by the band Tortoise, in the meantime...

Whether you recognize Portnoy doesn't really matter to me...he's among the most expressionless and standardized session musicians ever...anyway, if you're interested in hearing some highly expressive drummers from the '90s who don't emphasize constant technical demonstration, even though they possess it, check out "Spiderland" by Slint or something by Tortoise ("millions now living"), or Red Sparowes; I could go on endlessly...if you really don't want to listen to Aenima or Lateralus...

In my opinion, it is much more unnatural to believe in God (especially the Christian one) than not to believe. Imagine a small group of men and women who were raised and lived on a deserted island... it would never occur to them to invent a deity like the Christian or Muslim ones, nor would they somehow receive a revelation; however, this does not prevent them from developing a shared morality that does not claim to stem from divine enlightenment... a morality that prevents them from killing other individuals or helping those in need... and all this without the Gospel having influenced them.

Anyway, with catchy phrases you don't get anywhere. Explain to me what it means to say "believing costs nothing" when you know very well (or you’re an idiot) that faith is something one cannot decide to have overnight.

I did not decide in advance not to believe, but came to that conclusion logically. If it makes you happy to think otherwise, go ahead; everyone follows their own path.

Yes, of course, why not? Tool are expressionless, while Dream Theater, on the other hand... come on, to say that Carey is a hired gun while praising Portnoy is already pretty ridiculous. If we also add that you claimed Britt Walford and John McEntire have a mainstream and polished sound, there’s more than enough to get a complete picture.

I don't need to delude myself to make sense of my life. "A believer is a bird in a cage, a freethinker is an eagle parting the clouds with tireless wing."

@duane: what the hell does "believing costs nothing" mean? You can't just decide to believe in God... it's something spontaneous, either you believe it or you don't, it shouldn't be a useless hypocritical effort, like that of so many bigots.

Yes, but the fact remains that those drummers gave their best in the '70s; damn, in the '80s/90s there are people who know how to work the skins: Danny Carey, Britt Walford, John McEntire, Dale Crover, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Abruzzese, Merv Pepler, the same Chamberlin, Terry Bozzio, etc...
