And anyway, I’m not saying it’s on the level of Biagio Antonacci; simply put, if Biagio is zero, Symphony X would be 30, but the music I listen to now is 100, if you know what I mean...(F# A# (Infinity) by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, just to give an example)...

senmayan, I criticize the genre precisely because I have known it in depth, as a few years ago I listened to nothing else; then fortunately I started to listen to other things and I realized what I was missing.

So for you the necessary requirements are these? Technical virtuosity and instrumental parts interspersed with singing? Then anything is progressive! But please, try not to spout nonsense because it makes you look better.

@alessio: "Panopticon" (2004) is one of my favorite albums and it's definitely the first I recommend to you, a true masterpiece. If you love post-rock sounds, the latest "In the Absence of Truth" (2006) is also very nice, while if you prefer pure and hard sludge, then go for "Oceanic" (2002).

The Metallica were doing Thrash in the '80s, while the SX have both Power and Thrash components. Come on, don't tell me that the riff of "Of Sins and Shadows" isn't thrash... or the riffs on the album Odyssey... As for progressive, could you tell me what your criteria are for considering an album prog? I'm curious.

Sirbony, if you find it boring, you don’t have to say that we are a group for sissies that isn’t worth anything, because upon closer inspection, albums like Aenima or Panopticon have a MEANING that albums like this Paradise Lost don’t possess by mistake, being solely focused on searching for form.

I know they're always labeled as progressive metal, but based on my (and not just my) understanding of progressive, they have nothing to do with it. Meanwhile, Romeo's riffs are very much connected to Thrash, just like the lightning-fast keyboards and the double-pedal gallops tie back to Power. Don't come at me with a lecture about the crude metal encyclopedias, which I assure you don't tell me a damn thing new that I don't already know.

Let's compare, I don't know, a song like "Wills Dissolve" by Isis to any track from this album by SX. You will immediately notice for yourself which of the two is expressive and original; I'm not talking about which one you prefer, this isn't about taste, but rather about objectively discernible criteria of artistic quality.

Tool have been fundamental for rock, and an album like Aenima proves it with its originality and compositional personality; it really makes sense. On the other hand, no album by SX, despite being packed and soaked in technique (often for its own sake), has even the slightest semblance of expressive originality. Attention: by originality, I don’t mean playing solos with the diminished scale instead of the minor scale; I mean the ability to convey a unique expressive sense to the music. Let me give you some contrasts so you can understand: Stratovarius = NOT EXPRESSIVE - Slint = EXPRESSIVE or Mr. Big = NOT ORIGINAL - Dinosaur Jr. = ORIGINAL or also Symphony X = NOT ORIGINAL - Isis = ORIGINAL or Dream Theater = NOT EXPRESSIVE - Tim Buckley = ULTRA-EXPRESSIVE.
