I told you I like Lukather's touch; he improvises very well, he's a great craftsman, but honestly, I have a lot better to listen to than being there to hear guitar solos, no matter how skillfully and expertly they are played... I love the guitar, but over time I've discovered that its harmonic possibilities are far beyond a pleasantly enjoyable blues, jazz, or classic rock improvisation. A Lee Ranaldo, an Ash Bowie, or a Dave Pajo are billions of times more expressive to me than the usual Van Halens, Lukathers, Satrianis, etc...

Avenger, I've been playing the guitar for a few years now and I can tell you that what Petrucci does is perfectly reproducible by any guitarist who is willing to practice chromatic, pentatonic, major, minor scales, sweep, etc. at a certain speed... in short, it's a matter of finger coordination exercise that can be complex if you want it to be, but lacks any artistic sense, except for the purely citationist one of which Dream Theater are perfect architects. Anyway, on who is better between Petrucci and Lukather, I think it comes down to personal taste... the only objective fact is that both have an approach that is very common among session musicians, that of citation and the storage of licks, scales, and arpeggios that are completely schematized and canonized; an approach that, in no case, leads to the reworking of languages in an original and communicative way.

I honestly have no idea what it is... I used to have Beck's guitar shop but I deleted it, while I have some Toto albums and a couple of his solo records from Lukather that I honestly listen to once in a blue moon, but it's been enough to give me an idea of what kind of guitarist he is.

Anyway, Lukather has a great touch, he’s an excellent musician, but I don’t consider him an artist... he may have even played with Mephistopheles himself, but you don’t earn the title of artist with a session musician’s resume, no matter how extensive it is.

Thank you for being there! I’m glad you told me; otherwise, I would have never known!

Beautiful, hey! The first things I will do as soon as the cainano kicks the bucket will be: 1. Record the evening Tg4 and make a commemorative DVD; 2. throw a party with my friends (who think exactly like me) where we will sing at the top of our lungs the Forza Italia anthem under the influence of alcohol.

In agreement with Alessio, I not only hope every day that the bald gnome of Arcore kicks the bucket, but I have promised myself multiple times to organize a mega-party to celebrate the day he bites the dust :) And I don’t wish death so easily.

Petrucci and Lukather are two guitarists with the artistic sensitivity of a session musician punching in at a recording studio... personally, in terms of touch, I prefer the session player Lukather, but as a cover band guitarist, Petrucci is unbeatable... XD
