While punk has only two or three chords, the V.U. expanded the conversation with a dark interpretation of the psychedelic folk-rock of the 13th Floor Elevators. Still, nothing extraordinary, if they hadn’t had an avant-garde genius like Cale, a rather original voice like Nico, and, let’s be honest, a boost from Warhol.

That the V.U. were punk is a damned cliché. They should be considered punk for their ideals, for certain anticipations of the times, but still for the edges. Their music is to punk what Thelonious Monk is to rap.
