Then: you fixate on the fact that the new black was released a year after Alien... if that's the case, this year Devin has released two albums with his main bands, Synchestra (with the Devin Townsend Band) and the new black with the Syl; and in addition, he produces and manages albums for other bands and has HevyDevy to run... not bad for someone who finds time to write tracks that feel like b-sides and outtakes...

Why do all "transition" albums have to be crap? Who said that, sorry? I put down four stars because once again the SYL have managed to renew their sound in a year, producing a valid and different product; it may be a transition album but you can already hear the new ideas that Devin & co will use in the next record, a perfect appetizer for what's to come. Moreover, The New Black is the most accessible of their discography, perfect for newcomers and for those wanting to get closer to the band, and that's absolutely not to be underestimated.

Panzer, Townsend is a very peculiar artist and has his own underlying philosophy (which is reflected in the group). I assure you he’s not as unfriendly as you think... here we’re talking about a well-rounded artist who loves his music, composing intelligently and above all NEVER TAKING HIMSELF TOO SERIOUSLY, and the fact that he wants to play live so little and fully dedicate himself to studio work is proof that he is the ultimate anti-rockstar... you might have read the interviews after the release of the new black when he was extremely angry, but if you read the others he's the calmest (and craziest) man in the world.

Perhaps we’re losing sight of the core of the Townsend thought: changing skin with each album. Clinging to a City or an Alien, which I regard as the two masterpieces of the band, isn't right and it doesn’t align with Devin’s philosophy... it would have been very easy for him to reproduce those sounds, those riffs, those atmospheres that have revolutionized the entire genre. The new black is a transitional album (and you can feel it), but to say that the record is a collection of b-sides and outtakes... well, that takes some doing!

What do you mean by dark, cox? If you're referring to the entire album, its atmosphere, its themes, and the imagery it aims to evoke, then the term "dark" fits perfectly. Otherwise, if you mean the dark genre, well, I don't think it's very present in the CSC.

You're ass(urd)!!! But come on, tell the truth, what you liked the most was the latest Blind Guardian... forget about the Melvins.
