Here, I find that the interpretation and intensity achieved by Staley is far superior to any AIC album (also thanks to the different background of the musicians, which leans more toward hard rock and acid blues than toward the more metallic side of Cantrell and associates). I believe that the perfect combination of instrumentalists and refined sounds fit like a velvet glove to Staley's voice, which could finally express its greatness outside the context of Alice in Chains. If you listen to each track, you'll notice that certain nuances can only be found exclusively in Above. Ah, I prefer by far the guitar touch that McCready has on this album over all of Jerry Cantrell's riffs.
